How We Keep Our Kids Safe While Traveling in Our Motorhome

SHARE

Is motorhome travel safe for kids? The short answer: yes. And in our case, even more than we initially expected.

One thing that really stood out to us with our rig is that every designated seat in the back, couches and table included, is equipped with a seatbelt and approved for travel. That gave us an added level of comfort right away. It means the kids aren’t limited to just a couple of seats up front. Everyone has a safe, secure place to sit while we’re on the road.

That said, we still treat motorhome travel just like we would any other vehicle when it comes to safety. Everyone stays seated and buckled anytime the motorhome is moving, no exceptions. It can be tempting, especially on long drives, to let kids move around, but staying consistent with this rule is really important.

Another thing we’ve learned is how much driving habits matter. Motorhomes are bigger, heavier and take a little more care to handle than your everyday vehicle. We’re more mindful of speed, give ourselves extra stopping distance, and plan routes that feel comfortable and safe for our setup.

What surprised us most is how quickly this all becomes second nature. The kids know the routine, buckling up is automatic and safety just becomes part of how we travel.

Motorhome travel might look different from the outside, but when it comes to keeping your family safe, it really comes down to the same principles: seatbelts, awareness and consistency.

If you’ve been on the fence about this means of travel because of safety concerns, know this: Once you understand your rig and build good habits, it can be an incredibly safe and comfortable way to explore with your family.

SARA AND KYLE NORDMAN

Entegra Coach Ambassadors: Vision XL

Sara and Kyle are brand new to the motorhome lifestyle. Since their kids have gotten older, they've been inspired to show them this great nation that we live in and what better way to see it than by traveling in their motorhome! Sometimes it's not just the destination but the journey and traveling in their Entegra Coach Vision XL that allows them to enjoy the journey. Their travel plans will mostly revolve around weekends and extended weekends, so it's a perfect fit for them with both working full-time and two children in school. This lifestyle does require a bit of warrior spirit, as they are often on a tighter schedule with fewer days to reach their destination and make the most of the experience. They are excited to use the motorhome to explore every state and venture off the beaten path.
